Amelia felt nervous about contacting Nicolas Wan to try to seek some answers about Damon. Maybe Nicolas would automatically believe the man’s word over hers. Or maybe he would believe her, and given the level of secrecy of their underground organization, he would do something horrible to Damon.

Regardless of how she felt about Damon personally, she didn’t necessarily want that on her conscience.

So, almost instinctively, she needed to work up her courage to come to a decision.

And with that, she decided to go in a direction that always gave her courage in times of great stress and anxiety.

She whipped out a bottle of wine and quickly poured herself a glass.

She also considered using some of her meditation techniques, until she realized that, whenever she heard that soothing voice in her mind, she always thought of Damon, who’d taught them to her.

The idea made her shake so much, she poured herself another glass.

At which point, she didn’t really care that she knew this was exactly what her mother would’ve done in times of stress.

All that mattered was that her muscles relaxed, and her mind relaxed a little as well.

Which was when, all of a sudden, a thought entered her mind: why go to the trouble of contacting the police, or Nicolas, when she hadn’t attempted to deal with Damon, face-to-face, one last time.

After all, when she ended their formal relationship, she’d done it professionally, and he’d handled it very well. And going to him before escalating the situation was, certainly, the professional thing to do.

Yes, she decided. She would attempt to stop all this in the simplest way possible. By dealing with Damon directly.

She was so pleased with her decision, she never stopped to consider that she was going to speak to the man whom she last saw beating her ex-husband to a bloody pulp outside her door. The man who had been showing up randomly in her life and kissing her without her consent.

Fortunately, wine really was the only thing that could justify such a level of human foolishness. A little bit of Italian red helped to keep those thoughts out of mind as well.

And so, after prepping her clothes, prepping her words, and—frankly—prepping her escape route, she picked up the phone and dialed Damon.

It barely had time to ring before he picked up.

“Hey there, sexy,” he said. “Long time no hear, stranger. What’s going on? New job? More family get-togethers?”

“No, Damon,” she said. “We need to talk.”

“Yeah, sure. What would you like to talk about?”

“No, I mean in person.”

“Well, sure, you know I’m always happy to see you. So, where? Walk through a park, or—”

“Let’s meet at that café down the road from my place.”

“Cool, cool. Maybe after, we can head over to your place and—”

“Damon, this is serious.”

“Is everything all right?”

“Look, just get over here. I mean go to the café. Not here. To the café.”

“All right … See you in a bit.”

Amelia was about to hang up the phone, and then she listened and realized that Damon hadn’t hung up first.
